Drugs That Cause Insomnia

Finding the Drugs that Cause Insomnia

If you have always been a sound sleeper and suddenly find yourself staying awake all night then the cause could be a new supplement you are taking. Drugs that cause insomnia range from medication prescribed to solve medical conditions to supplements that you can buy over the counter.

If you have recently bought any over the counter medication and find yourself awake all night then it might be time to stop taking the medication. If it’s a medical condition that you are treating then alternative drugs might be the answer. Talking to a doctor about your newfound insomnia is a good idea if it persists.

Common Drugs

You might not think of caffeine or alcohol as drugs that cause insomnia but they are definitely two common drugs that cause insomnia. Caffeine is a drug that many of us take without thinking twice, it’s just coffee you say. Caffeine does keep you up and drinking too much of it in the course of a day might lead to you being too wired to sleep.

Another factor that might lead to insomnia is alcohol. Many people think of alcohol as a way to relax and unwind after work and before bed. A glass or two of red wine is even considered healthy. If you drink more than that before bed you are likely to find yourself awake all night.

Ritalin

Ritalin is supposed to have a calming effect and is used to treat Attention Deficit Disorder, so how would this be one of the drugs that cause insomnia? In older children Ritalin is actually known to have the opposite effect of its prescribed effect. It can cause older children to become hyperactive and this in turn can lead to insomnia. In some children this could be the source of child insomnia.

Cocaine

Cocaine is taken by some people as a stimulant. Whether recreationally or used heavily everyday, cocaine is one of the drugs that cause insomnia. Besides insomnia cocaine causes many other health problems and leads to compulsive and addictive behaviour.

Steroids

Steroids are commonly used to treat many diseases and medical conditions. It is also commonly used to treat asthma and emphysema. If you are suffering from asthma and taking medication for it then this could be the reason that you suddenly find yourself unable to sleep. Sometimes it may seem impossible to battle insomnia if it is related to the drugs you are taking to treat medical conditions but it is still possible to substitute your medication.
